Litter Prevention

The King William/West Point Litter Prevention Program is a cooperative program between the county and the Town of West Point. It includes litter prevention and recycling education for the schools, communication with citizens and community groups, and clean ups of both the highways and the local rivers.

The program is funded by an annual grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which is supplemented by county funding approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Educational Program Sponsorship

The Litter Prevention Program sponsors educational programs and materials in the schools to raise student awareness of the littering problem and the importance of recycling. Programs that have been offered in recent years include the Virginia Wildlife Center's Critters Don’t Need Litter program and The Magic of Recycling.

The Litter Prevention Coordinator provides information to citizens and groups about litter prevention, recycling, and solid waste management in the county including information on waste drop-off sites, their schedules, and what materials can be recycled at each location. The Litter Prevention Coordinator is also available to speak to community organizations and school groups.

Clean Up Efforts

Clean up efforts in the county include the annual Spring Clean Up during the month of April, the annual river clean up which is part of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers Stewardship Day the first Saturday in June, the Adopt-a-Spot Program, and coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Adopt-a-Highway Program. Applications for these programs are available at the Litter Prevention Office. The coordinator can assist in citizen clean ups by providing bags, orange vests, and "grab-it" tools for check out to anyone interested in doing a clean up. The coordinator also works closely with local VDOT staff to have bags of litter removed after they have been collected by citizens.
